Chronic Pain Can Also be Mind-Altering

I was speaking with someone today that shared what his sponsor told him about pain management in recovery.  As most people in recovery know; taking any mind-altering substances is dangerous.  But what is also dangerous is the mind set of “don’t take anything no matter what.”

The man I was speaking to was dealing with pain in recovery and told his sponsor he was afraid to take the mind-altering prescription medication his docotor had given him.  His sponsor told him that “pain is mind altering too; so you ‘d better listen to your doctor.” This sponsor was very wise.  When people live with high levels of pain on a daily basis and don’t get adequate pain relief they can start “suffering.”  This will lead to one of two things; (a) they’ll get to the point that they start using too much or the wrong thing; or (b) they get so depressed they are at risk for suicide.

That’s why developing an appropriate and effective medication management plan is one of the three core components of the Addiction-Free Pain Management® System.  The other two components are (a) developing a cognitive behavioral/affective treatment plan for the psychological/emotional components of pain and (b) developing a nonpharmacological (non-medication) plan in addition to the other two interventions.
