Philosophy - Inland Valley Recovery Services treatment programs are based on the Therapeutic Community (TC) concept of recovery. Inland Valley Recovery Services provides a drug-free residential setting that uses a hierarchical model with treatment stages that reflect increased levels of personal and social responsibility. Peer influence, mediated through a variety of group processes, is used to help individuals learn and assimilate social norms and develop more effective social skills. This approach is often referred to as “community as method”. TC members interact in structured and unstructured ways to influence attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors associated with drug use. Many individuals have a history of social functioning, education/vocational skills, and positive community and family ties that have been eroded by their substance abuse. For them, recovery involves rehabilitation—relearning or re-establishing healthy functioning, skills, and values as well as regaining physical and emotional health. TC’s are physically and programmatically designed to emphasize the experience of the community within the residence. New clients are immersed in the community and must fully participate in it. It is expected that in doing so, their identification with and ties to their previous drug-using life will lessen and they will learn and assimilate new prosocial attitudes, behaviors, and responsibilities.

Family program description - Multi-Family groups. Recovery from addiction is a difficult process. For many clients in IVRS’ residential treatment programs this is clearly the most difficult thing they have ever done in their entire lives. For some, it may be a matter of live and death. Family Support Groups are offered to family members, friends and significant others of IVRS’ residential clients. The groups are intended to provide knowledge of the disease of addiction, the treatment process and support for family member and significant others, and friends of the client. Over 4,000 people each year participate in one of the many prevention and recovery programs Inland Valley Recovery Services has offered to break the cycle of addiction and mend the lives of those suffering from behavioral health conditions since its beginning in 1962. Fa mil y intervention, detoxification, resident and outpatient treatment services and transitional living homes are available for both men and women and adults with children. IVRS also offers supportive services such as anger management and DUI classes, fa mil y counseling, twelve-step groups, and clean and sober leisure activities at the Mystic Coffee Shop. An exciting step for IVRS is the purchase of a 3.5 acre campus where all the programs will eventually be joined to form a controlled therapeutic environment. The facility includes common rooms, childcare, double residence rooms, offices and counseling rooms. One of the first steps in making the location “home” was the creation of a magnificent playground made possible by KaBoom, Home Depot and the Upland Foothill Kiwanis Club. Over 300 people worked to construct the playground in one day. The day after the playground was completed; a rock labyrinth was created by local scout Cory Eazell.
