Letter from the Editor - September 2024

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As we embrace Recovery Month this September, RecoveryView is proud to present our 65th edition, celebrating the strength, courage, and resilience of individuals on their path to recovery. Recovery Month serves as a time to honor those who have overcome addiction and mental health challenges, while also raising awareness about the resources and support available for those still on the journey.

This year, we are also mindful of the importance of Suicide Prevention, particularly as we reflect on the intersection of mental health and addiction. Recovery is not a solitary path, and our focus this month is on fostering community, compassion, and connection, so no one has to face these challenges alone.

Spotlight Book:

"Kristina with a K" by Kristina Padilla

Our featured book, Kristina with a K, is a gripping and heartfelt memoir by Kristina Padilla. Kristina takes us through her personal journey of addiction, recovery, and self-discovery, offering a deeply emotional narrative that highlights the unique struggles faced by individuals in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Her story is one of survival, resilience, and transformation, as she moves from a life marred by gang violence and substance abuse to a place of healing and hope. This book stands as a powerful testament to the strength it takes to reclaim one’s life and identity.

Bhakti Fest, returning to Southern California this month, offers an ideal environment for those in recovery to immerse themselves in spiritual growth, healing, and conscious living all in a substance-free space. This partnership between Advanced Therapeutic Services and Bhakti Fest creates a nurturing environment where participants can connect through yoga, music, and holistic practices that align with their recovery goals. Bhakti Fest’s commitment to sobriety makes it a perfect celebration for Recovery Month.

 Feature Article:

"Serenity Altars: The Therapeutic Power of Nature and Earth Art in Recovery"

"Serenity Altars" introduces a creative form of active meditation through nature-based art. Inspired by the Morning Altars method, this practice uses natural materials to create intricate mandalas, providing a peaceful and therapeutic outlet for those in recovery. Serenity Altars offer a hands-on way to engage with mindfulness, making them especially beneficial for individuals who may struggle with traditional meditation. This process of creating, reflecting, and releasing mirrors the journey of recovery itself.

 Additional Article Highlights:

"Supporting a 24/7 Crisis Social Worker Partnership in Clarksburg, WV to Combat the Opioid Crisis"

This spotlight highlights Clarksburg’s innovative program in partnership with United Way, where crisis social workers respond to opioid-related emergencies alongside law enforcement. This initiative provides immediate mental health support and addresses the root causes of addiction, offering a compassionate approach to those in crisis.

Recovery Month reminds us that recovery is possible for everyone, and that healing happens through connection, support, and access to the right resources. It’s also a reminder to address Suicide Prevention, especially for those battling both addiction and mental health issues. Together, we can help break the cycle of addiction and prevent tragedies, offering hope and care for everyone who needs it.
