John O. Whitaker, Jr., CDS, CATC II, is very proud that September 25, 2013, marks 16 years of personal recovery from all mind-altering substances. John has worked in the Substance Use Disorder profession with other alcoholics/addicts in official and personal capacities for more than 10 years. John received his Bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in communications in 1986, and he is very proud to have completed the Pierce College’s Addiction Studies Program in 2004 Suma Cum Laud under the direction of Dr. James Crossen, PhD. It was under his tutelage and continued support that John decided to reach out to the families of addicts and alcoholics through family interventions in both English and Spanish.
John has worked since he was three years old, when he landed his first paid job as a used car salesman for an OK used cars commercial in the early ’60s. John became well known as the child star, Johnny Whitaker, recognized as one of the most beloved child stars of the ’60s and ’70s. He gave two-time Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster her first onscreen kiss in the 1973 musical film, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, and is remembered best as Jody Davis from the ’60s family television series, “Family Affair”, or the Saturday Morning children’s television program as John Stuart in “Sigmund and The Sea Monsters”.
John started in addiction treatment at The Canyon at Peace Park; then was the Intake Counselor and Community Outreach Specialist for People In Progress; and for six-and-half years worked at Tarzana Treatment Centers, Inc., where he got his start as an advocate.
